The story of my trip around the world to train, teach and compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and other grappling arts.

Really expensive vaccination 1/2

Today, I got the first of two vaccination shots against Japanese encephalitis. Each of the vaccinations costs a whopping 980 DKR, equivalent to USD$ 170. It does last for life though, but still pretty expensive, I think :)

I need to figure out, wether or not I should get some malaria pills. They are even more expensive, so gotta talk to people living in the areas I go, if it is necessary or not.

Personally I wouldn’t want to stint on anti-malarials: after all, it can be fatal. Lots of info on the CDC site.

I used Doxycycline when I did a round the world trip, and as I didn’t get malaria over those three months or so, I’d assume the pills worked pretty well (though they did make me throw up once in Nepal, when I forgot to take them with food).

Usually antimalarials are way cheaper in the places where it’s a problem. I bought a month’s worth in the US before heading off to Central America for a 6 month trip. Forget how much that cost here, but it was not cheap– then I got to Guatemala and the durn stuff (mefloquine/Lariam and chloroquine both) was soooo much cheaper and readily available at the farmacias. I’d take some with you but not enough for the whole trip, imho.

Interesting. Is there a way of being certain that your destination will have the relevant medication in stock, and available without having to jump through some bureaucratic hoops?

If it was me, I’d be terrified of something going wrong, leaving me without medication and vulnerable to catching something that could easily kill me (or at best, guarantee a really crappy couple of weeks).
